Wednesday, May 09, 2007 Oh..i see. so you've got to type BELOW this brown box that supposed to be the toolbar "p
hmmm...the reality of life tends to bite really hard. haha..oh well. thanks for hearing me out though, moses, vic, chang.. you know chang, you really hit the nail on the head when you said that sometimes I gotta learn to accept help when I'm unable to solve problems on my own. Though from time to time, I even veer to the other extreme: asking for help when (to others, it appears) I don't really it. hmmm..that's a rather interesting thought. I wonder if that had something to do with the fact that I was constantly attacked by my peers in Soci of Deviance tutorials. hah, well I guess I'll just dismiss that for now as the "individuation" of society and the result of a meritocratic Singapore. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that you get participation points for contributing to tutorial discussions, and that I did like to blabber quite a lot. (But mostly it's because there's something I feel worth bringing up! I mean, if people don't want to contribute to dicussions they shouldn't suppress/oppress others who do..) heh..whatever. anyway it was kind of interesting how a certain Melissa approached me on the last day of school (it was after the exam mass) and asked why I didn't attend the last tutorial. She added that she felt sorry for me and was often tempted to stand up for me - haha. oh well. I don't know why that made me feel rather self-pitying for a while, but hey, i'm not gonna stop contributing just because my peers aren't. (I recall during the 4th and last one I attended, this girl just burst out "that's the most stupid example I've ever heard! why are you always giving such stupid examples?" to which I replied, calmly, "well, because I choose to. I CHOOSE to be deviant." yup, that's how the average discussion in our tutorials of 30+ people would go..interesting right? "p) Although I don't think my example was at all stupid - maybe a little controvertial. we were discussing the role of power in defining deviance, and Ms. Nafis asked us to suggest an example. I described how the action of our lecturer setting exam questions for us to sit for is an example of power structures that play a role in defining deviance - the lecturer being the social control agent, the one in power who defines who are deviant according to the specific questions he's set: students who answer the questions according to what he defines as acceptable get an A, but those who do not answer according to the 'set of accepted norms and rules of behaviour' end up being labelled as deviant, by getting a C grade. haha..it's probably just as well that I (though unintentionally) skipped the last of the five bi-weekly sessions. too much controversy, while stimulating, may be a little too much for some people to handle. oooh..okay. now this wasn't really what I had planned on blogging about. hah, but once I got started on this thought, I guess the post simply flowed out :p I was planning on blogging on the eventful day I had yesterday, with the impromptu cycling trip I had with Chang..haha. I hadn't been to East Coast in a while..it's changed quite a bit. did you know now there's a Burger King outlet there too! haha..anyway I think I'll stop here for now. meeting moses and the guys to plan our CSS Arts Retreart, 11am at City Hall :) now there's something to relax the mind! raneth hopped off at 8:13 am
